USCIS Simplifies Process for Obtaining a Social Security Number for Naturalization Applicants

United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) has announced a simplified process for obtaining Social Security Numbers (SSNs) for newly naturalized U.S. citizens. Effective April 1, 2024, applicants filing Form N-400, Application for Naturalization (edition date 04/01/24), will have the option to request an original or replacement SSN card and authorize USCIS to update their immigration status with the Social Security Administration (SSA) directly on the form.

Benefits of the new Form N-400:

  • Applicants submitting the new Form N-400 can elect to request an original or replacement SSN card and authorize USCIS to update their immigration status with the SSA.
  • This eliminates the traditional requirement for new citizens to visit an SSA office for SSN application or status updates.

Please note the SSA may request additional information on a case-by-case basis.
